Pet Portraits! Echo the Aylestone Bulldog
This weekend I met my first Aylestone Bulldog! Part Bulldog, part Dogue de Bordeaux (Like the dog in Turner and Hooch) Her name was Echo and she was one of the loveliest, most well behaved and funniest dogs I’ve ever met. She’s not yet reached the stage where she runs at you, jowls flapping and drool flying everywhere, which is nice as it meant we got to play with her and I could photograph her without needing waterproof casing for my camera
Here’s some images of Echo the Aylestone Bulldog!
She’s cute eh! These were all shot just using natural light from a large window and my trusty 50mm lens at around f1.8-2.8 giving those lovely out of focus backgrounds.
Nottingham Light Night 2012
Last night was Light Night in Nottingham City Centre. It’s an annual event where the city puts on various light installations and displays. As always there was a great atmosphere with loads of people milling around enjoying the various projections and entertainment. Here’s some images I took whilst walking around the city:
I’ve just about thawed out now from the sub-zero conditions

Belinda Carlisle @ Nottingham Royal Concert Hall
So, here it is! A selection of images from Belinda Carlisle’s set at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall on Friday night. It was a great night and she still has loads of energy and great stage presence – the crowd were mad for her!
For those of you who don’t already you can ‘like’ my page on Facebook – Jon Davies Music Photographer where I will be uploading more images over the next few days.

Backstage with Nina Smith @ Nottingham Concert Hall
Last night 80′s Icon – Belinda Carlisle played at The Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham with Nina Smith as her support act. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to go backstage and shoot some documentary photography of Nina and her ‘Man Band’ during their soundcheck and before they went on stage as well as photographing their set and then Belindas.
Here are a few images from before they took to the stage:
I’ll have some images uploaded from both Nina and Belinda Carlisle’s set very shortly!

Evil Scarecrow Promo Photography Part 3!
Here are a few more images from my Evil Scarecrow promo shoot. The band needed some product shots to promote their merchandise and T-shirts on their website. We thought that some cheesy, white background catalogue type shots would work well so here they are!

Keep an eye out for more posts as I’m on a bit of a blogging mission at the moment
Until next time!

Evil Scarecrow Promo Shots!
Today I have been in the studio photographing metal band Evil Scarecrow. It’s quite late so I’m not going to babble but I’ve just edited a couple of my favourite shots from the day so here they are!
The band are a great bunch of people and really good fun to shoot. More images to come over the next few days.
Wollaton Park – Off Camera Flash
Today I decided that my long suffering reluctant model and girlfriend (not reluctantly my girlfriend, just model!) was going to put on a pretty dress and let me take some shots of her using some off camera flash techniques at Wollaton Park in Nottingham.
After arriving at the park and realising that I had left all of my memory cards at home I left her there and went back home to get them. By the time I got back 40 minutes later I found a very cold and not best pleased reluctant model who was even less impressed that I’d left her to freeze for so long in -1 degree temperatures wearing a dress and tights. Still, being the sweetheart that she is she let me take some pictures and I think has just about forgiven me now she’s thawed out and seen the images
I’ve done a fair bit of processing of these images using textures in Photoshop to give some of them an almost watercolour like appearance. I really like the effect and will probably be using this technique again for another shoot I have coming up this month.
In other news… I will be transferring my blog over the my new website in the next week or so, so keep an eye out for the new look blog!

Nina Smith Promo shoot part 2!
This post is a continuation from my last. I got so many images from the shoot with Nina Smith that I’m happy with that it’s made it hard to narrow them down to a short blogs worth. So… here are another millions photos
Enjoy!

Nina Smith – Promo shots
Nottingham has one of the best up and coming music scenes in the country today. It’s a fact, and with so much talent bubbling away under the surface it’s just a matter of time before someone breaks out into the mainstream and puts the Nottingham music scene on the map in a big way.
Nina Smith might well be that artist. She was recently voted ‘artist most likely to break through’ by the musicians of Nottingham in a recent poll and after a mad year last year, 2012 looks set to be even bigger.
Last weekend I spent a couple of hours in the studio with Nina to get some promo shots for her new website which is due to be launched in the very near future. I’ve been inspired recently by a British fashion photographer called Rankin so thought I would have a go at creating some really stylish looking ‘high fashion’ images.
Nina was really up for the session and loads of fun to shoot, which I think really shows through in the images. I’d also like to say a big thank you to Lauren Creasey; our amazing make up artist who helped out at the last minute and did a fantastic job! You can check out her work here: http://www.laurencreasey.co.uk/
It was nice to have a personal project I could really get my teeth into as it felt although it’d been a while. I’ve got some big news coming up over the next month or so so keep an eye on the blog and my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jon-Davies-Music-Photographer/140673182666730 which will be being combined with the portrait side of my work soon as I’m trying to consolidate my sites to make it all a bit less complicated for everyone – including myself!
Ciao for now!
Ring Flash
So, Boxing Day is drawing to and end and I am once again feeling full of food, content, and somewhat sleepy despite the fact that at the time of writing it’s not even 9pm!
One of my favourite Christmas presents this year was a book of portraits by one of my favourite fashion photographers; Rankin. It’s full of really unique, striking portraits of celebrities, musicians, and actors. You can buy the book here:
One of the main features of Rankins style is that he uses a lot of Ring Flash which creates bright, shadowless images and odd looking circular catch lights in the eyes of the subject due to the fact that the light is coming from a circular flash which is positioned around the camera lens. It’s a really popular look for fashion photography as it makes skin look absolutely flawless.
Looking through the pictures reminded me that I’d shot a few images with one about a year ago and that I hadn’t really done anything with them so I dug them out and had a bit of a play. Here they are:
And here are a few other images I came across at the same time. Not shot with ring flash but thought I’d add them to this post anyway:
Right, well that’s me off to fall asleep in front of the TV for an hour before dragging myself off to bed
I love Christmas!!
Jon
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you’ve all had amazing days and that Father Christmas was kind to you all – I know he was to me
After a day full of indulgence, eating far too much and then laying on the floor feeling like a right fatty I decided to do some photo editing. I thought I’d dig out some images I took quite a while ago and have a play with to see if I could create something new from some old model portfolio images. I’m quite happy with the results, hopefully you’ll like them too:
I’ve got another post ready to put up but it’s definitely time to try to sleep off the rest of my Christmas dinner so I’ll leave that one until tomorrow.
Until then!
Alternative nottingham band promos (and a moroccan man…)
It’s been almost exactly one month since my last blog post which is poor form! Sorry folks…
It’s been a really busy period at the studio so I’ve not had a huge amount of time for my personal work lately which is why I haven’t uploaded any images since my trip out to Morocco.
Now that the excuses are over I’ll get on with the content of my latest post and a little bit of background…
I have recently become a non-smoker!
It has been 9 days 4 hours and 58 minutes since my last cigarette
(i know this because of my iphone app that tells me how great I am for giving up!) and I’ve found myself feeling a lot more creative since giving up so I’ve been going back over some of my old images and giving them a bit of a spruce up and doing some ‘alternative’ edits on them.
I’ve been playing with textures and experimenting with some dark and moody looks for images; possibly the result of the angst and torment I’ve felt over the last week (poor me!)
Here are a few of the images I’ve been playing around with. If you follow my blog regularly you probably will have seen them before but this is a very different take on the originals:
I’ll make sure my next post features some nice fluffy, lovely images to make up for the dark, brooding feel of these
Until next time!
